Nicholas Cicio, 31, of Newburgh, was sentenced on Wednesday, March 26, to 1⅓ to 4 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree vehicular assault in connection to a January 2024 crash in Goshen, Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced on Monday, March 31.
The charges stemmed from a serious two-car crash on January 18, 2024, on Pulaski Highway in Goshen. Responding officers noticed a blue powdery substance in Cicio’s nose and signs of impairment, and he later failed a field sobriety test. A preliminary breath test came back negative for alcohol, but a drug recognition expert found Cicio was unfit to drive.
A blood analysis later confirmed the presence of multiple controlled substances in Cicio’s system, including fentanyl, cocaine, Alprazolam (Xanax), and Hydrocodone, the DA's Office said.
One of the occupants in the other vehicle suffered serious injuries, including a fractured pelvis and wrist, requiring extended hospitalization, surgery, and physical therapy.
At his plea hearing, Cicio admitted to causing serious physical injury while impaired by drugs.
“The victim in this case is forced to live with the consequences of this defendant’s selfish actions," Hoovler said of the case.
